Words of Wisdom: Louise Webster on Parenting and Positive Living
Louise Webster launched Beyond The School Run in 2012 as a place to help parents utilise their skills in the hours available to them. Having taken her journey to Downing Street and The Cabinet Office, Louise is passionate about the positive impact supporting parents will have on families, society, and the economy. Positive Luxury caught up with Louise to find out her top tips for parenting and positive living, and why her new book is a total revelation for mothers.
You recently wrote ‘A New Way For Mothers’. Can you tell us more about that?
I created my book to help empower mothers to combine work and caring for their children. To date, there has been either full-time or stay at home and this is a new way of looking at the issues and approaches. It isn’t just about work, but looking at the parent as a whole.
The point at which we become parents we evolve and I believe have an opportunity to discover parts of ourselves that maybe we haven’t already found, including: our purpose, what makes us happy, and how to become the strongest we can. The book takes a step-by-step approach with wisdom from mothers and experts, and my own journey and experiences.
What was the inspiration behind your book?
My inspiration was my own journey – a passion to combine caring and work. I looked at what it meant to ‘find your element’, the thing that we are all born to do. I explored how to tap into your element during short windows of time and how ‘flow’ was a significant part of achieving this.
I have shared as much of my own experiences as possible alongside some wisdom of many others in the book. When I started to receive comments – like the below – from readers, it made me realise why I wrote it. “Only half way through but loving it. Since becoming a mum this is the book I have wanted to find. It is feeding my soul. Thank you.”
Which key lessons do you wish people to take away having read your book?
I want people to realise that being yourself is all you need, but it can take steps to unravel your natural self from the person you have become. The parenting journey provides us with the opportunity to re-discover ourselves.
That our skills and talents help us grow and thrive. That when we utilise and share them in the hours available to us as parents collectively we can make a great difference to our lives and the lives of others.
What are your top tips for living positively?
Focus on your thoughts. For me, positive living starts from the inside and if your thoughts are peaceful and positive this will project out; what you project, in turn, you will receive. Notice what you say. Focus on your communication, and coming from your authentic voice. Connect with yourself daily, whether that is through exercise, meditation. Keep exploring until you find what creates the connection for you.
What is a luxury you couldn’t live without?
Wisdom, although I am not sure this is a luxury! Wisdom in understanding myself better, understanding the world, and how we can best thrive together within in it.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
This wasn’t given directly to me, but I keep this quote from Steve Jobs on my desk: “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life… Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow know what you truly want to become.”
