Natural Solutions to Your Haircare Problems

Bad hair day? We’re here to help with top tips to solving the most common haircare problems using natural products and techniques that will make you feel fabulous in no time.

I’d like my hair to be… softer and shinier

Unless you’re lucky, creating the perfect flowing glossy locks requires some care and attention. First of all, start with a gentle shampoo that won’t strip the natural oils from your hair – we like Alexandra Soveral’s Sweet Orange & Rosemary Shampoo, the innate properties of the rosemary add shine and bounce to your hair.

After shampooing, apply your choice of conditioner and rinse out using cold water, this will help seal the cuticle and leave your hair looking silkier. Finish with a styling crème to help smooth out any strays.

Our top tip: Try to avoid washing your hair everyday if you can. Overwashing can lead to dry and dull hair – if your hair feels a little greasy to wear down on day two or three then why not try an on-trend braid or a casual up-do to stretch out the times between washes.

I’d like my hair to be… frizz-free

Frizz happens when your hair is too dry and tries to suck up excess moisture from the air – hence why you might find your hair gets frizzier in hot, humid climates. Therefore, the key to tackling frizz is to lock in as much moisture as possible.

Choose natural shampoos and conditioners that will penetrate the hair itself without leaving any surface residue and try a deep conditioning treatment once a week. We recommend Neal’s Yard Remedies’ Rosemary & Cedarwood Hair Treatment that blends nourishing organic coconut oil with essential oils – use it as a pre-wash conditioner or leave on overnight for an intense moisture boost.

Our top tip: Dry your hair with care. Try swapping your regular towel for a jersey t-shirt to dab and squeeze out moisture without rubbing and irritating the follicles and texture of your hair. If using a hairdryer to finish your styling, turn it onto a cooler setting and use a diffuser for curls to avoid creating frizz.

I’d like my hair to be… dandruff-free

Dandruff can be an embarrassing and annoying haircare problem, but can often be easily solved through a few simple steps and choosing the right products. Your first step to tackling dandruff should be to brush your hair more regularly, and definitely before you shower, to loosen any dry skin on the scalp.

When washing your hair, massage the scalp thoroughly to loosen debris and stimulate blood circulation, then leave shampoo to sit on your hair for a few minutes to really get to work. For a deeper cleanse, try applying Kiehl’s Deep Micro-Exfoliating Scalp Treatment before shampooing, the naturally-derived formula has been dermatologist tested to loosen flaky build-up and stimulate healthy repair.

Our top tip: Be aware that stress and skin conditions, such as eczema, can cause dandruff, so if you’re finding it difficult to budge then consider how to boost your wider wellbeing to help your hair too.

I’d like my hair to be… stronger and healthier

Hair loss and breakage can really effect how you feel about yourself and your hair. There a number of factors that can create and prolong hair damage, but too much heat is often the biggest factor in making your hair dry, brittle and more likely to break. Experiment with ways to let your hair dry naturally, such as French-plaiting to create natural waves rather than using curling tongs.

Choosing the right products can help repair existing damage too. Weleda has been selling its Revitalising Hair Tonic since 1921 – the natural formula includes horseradish and rosemary oil to tackle the causes of thinning hair and build more growth and body.

Our top tip: Don’t brush your hair when it’s wet. Many people don’t realise that your hair is actually at its most delicate when wet, so use a wide-tooth comb rather than a brush to gently detangle hair after showering to avoid hair breakage.
